Team Dedicates Victory to Coach
Painted Post 13 year old All-Stars has some extra incentive to win the district 6 Championship this week.
They were dedicating their efforts in the memory of the Coach Gerald “Butch” Kimble who had succumbed to a heart attack during the first game of the series on July 14, 1979. “Butch’s” son Bobby had pitched most of the game against Mark Twain which was played in 100 degree heat at Elmira’s Dunn Field. Painted Post lost the contest 8-4.
The following day, parents, players, and league officials gathered at the Painted Post fields to determine whether the team should remain in tournament play. Mrs. Kimble who attended the session requested that the players continue.
Mark Anglehart accepted appointment as Team Manager with Bob L’Amoreaux remaining as Assistant Coach.
The Painted Post All-Stars returned to action on July 16, 1979 again facing Mark Twain. Rich Vang handled the pitching chores while Bobby Kimble covered First Base. Painted Post won that contest 5-2 and dedicated the victory to their late Manager. Mrs. Kimble was presented the autographed game ball.
Play resumed the following night at Dunn Field with Kimble pitching the team to a 9-4 verdict over Big Flats All-Stars. Wearing black armbands for their Championship game against Big Flats Wednesday, the team recorded a 6-2 victory. Each boy was presented a Championship pin and received congratulations from Mrs. Kimble.
Players on the District 6 Championship Team include: Greg Anderson, Carl Babcock, Todd L’Amoreaux, David Bunt, Kevin Clarkson, Mark Fox, Pat Gonta, Pete Harrington, Bobby Kimble, Kevin Price, Greg Strzegowski, Griff Thomas, Dave Taber, and Rich Vang.
